Stanford and Biodesign Finland programs celebrate together

Celebrating Need-Driven Innovation

A decade of transforming healthcare needs into meaningful innovations and with increased global collaboration.

The past two weeks have been a special time for the global Biodesign community, marking two major milestones: 25 years of Stanford Biodesign and 10 years of Biodesign Finland.

The celebrations began in the United States, where the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign marked 25 years of pioneering need-driven innovation in healthcare. The programme that started it all has inspired generations of innovators around the world, including the community behind Biodesign Finland.

From Stanford to Finland: A Shared Vision for Better Healthcare

The anniversary event brought together clinicians, engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, managers, lawyers, and other professionals passionate about improving healthcare.

The diversity of perspectives reflected one of the fundamental principles of Biodesign: meaningful healthcare innovation happens when people with different expertise work together to solve real-world problems.

The programme opened with a welcome from Otto Olavinen, Impact Coordinator at Biodesign Finland, followed by a keynote from Janene Fuerch, Associate Director of the Innovation Fellowship at Stanford Biodesign.

In her keynote, The Biodesign Mindset: From Healthcare Needs to Better Health and Patient Impact, Fuerch highlighted the importance of identifying genuine healthcare needs as the starting point for innovation as well as highlighting pediatrics as a key innovation area.

Prashant Jha, Professor of MedTech Innovation and Entrepreneurship at King's College London and a long-time collaborator of Biodesign Finland, delivered a special address on Innovation Across Borders. His contribution explored how need-driven innovation can connect people, institutions, and ecosystems across countries and how to collaborate with the NHS UK.

Together, the contributions from Stanford and King's College London underscored the international nature of the Biodesign movement and the value of collaboration across borders.

Ten Years of Turning Needs into Impact

A decade ago, Biodesign Finland began its journey with a simple but powerful ambition: to improve healthcare by identifying unmet needs and developing solutions that make a real difference.

The anniversary programme looked back at the initiative's beginnings, with a founders' discussion featuring senior advisor, professor .Risto Ilmoniemi of Aalto University, followed by reflections from Heikki Nieminen, Associate Professor at Aalto University and Head of Biodesign Finland.

Under the theme 10 Years. A Journey from Needs to Impact, Nieminen reflected on the people, teams, needs, innovations, and memorable moments that have shaped Biodesign Finland over the past decade — and how the programme has contributed to Finland's health innovation ecosystem.

The celebration also highlighted the work of Biodesign teams translating clinical needs into real-world solutions.

Sakari Nikinmaa, Co-Founder and CTO of Koite Health, and Wycliffe Raduma, CTO at OTOS Health, shared their experiences through innovation pitches, demonstrating how a structured approach to identifying healthcare needs can lead to promising innovations.

The programme further explored Biodesign Finland's role within the wider health ecosystem, with contributions from Otto Olavinen and Kalle Uibo, MedTech Founders Program Manager. The Medtech Founders programme has been developed as part of the HEVi project Breaking the silos for unified health innovations co-funded by the European union.

The event concluded with reflections on the next decade of Biodesign Finland and Finnish health innovation, followed by networking and celebrations leb by one of the Biodesign Finland's founders Jouko Lampinen.

Happy 10th anniversary, Biodesign Finland! And Happy 25th anniversary Stanford!
